On September 16, the International Day of Ozone Layer Protection was celebrated for the first time in Moscow. Timed with the start of the phase-down project for ozonedepleting substances in Russia, the event was supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Global Environment Fund (GEF), and State Polytechnic College No.19. The date was chosen to commemorate the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which was signed on the same date in 1987. Special lessons were held for university students and school pupils on protection of the ozone layer and the Russian Federation’s participation in the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol. Educational games on protection of the ozone layer were also organized.
