Natural Refrigerants Are You Qualified?

Globally the HVAC&R industry is evolving and changing mainly due to:

  • Increasing energy costs
  • The increasing cost of HFC and HCFC costs
  • The phase out of HCFC’s

Your clients will continue to seek ways to reduce their ongoing costs along with and power consumption costs.  As a result we forecast that within the next 10 years the fast majority of HVAC&R infrastructure will be replaced with natural refrigerant solutions.

To meet these demands you will need to be qualified to handle natural refrigerants including:

Hydrocarbon training is now needed more than ever, as hydrocarbons are now one of the cheaper and most talked about alternative refrigerants in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. They are relatively new in the Australian industry and are quickly being adopted due to their energy efficiencies and cost. Hydrocarbons are Natural Refrigerants and NOT taxed by the recently introduced Australian Carbon Tax.

Due to hydrocarbons being relatively new to the Australian industry, there are many myths and misconceptions on their refrigerant properties, abilities and applications. For this reason the College of Climate Change sees the need for further training and education to the trade.

Hydrocarbons are one of the greatest refrigerants available. Yes, they are flammable, but if handled correctly and safely then the risks can be minimized. The Australian Standards have been designed to minimize all risks with all refrigerants and should be followed at all times. There is also a number of sensors, signage and other safety design parameters that can be used and applied to maintain safety.

Hydrocarbons are non-toxic, unlike most HFC and HCFC refrigerants that are being used and accidentally breathed in by refrigeration mechanics. All refrigerants have their problems and issues, therefore it is important to understand and minimize them.

As consumers begin to search for methods to reduce their power consumption, environmental impact and the cost of ongoing refrigerant servicing, hydrocarbons will gain even further popularity.

The College of Climate Change is worried about the potential miss-use and lack of education in regards to how to safely handle and retrofit hydrocarbons. This is why the College of Climate Change provides hydrocarbon training for the industry.

The College of Climate Change has two hydrocarbon training options:

1. Class training for individuals or smaller numbers.
2. Company training for larger numbers. Specific to your industry.

The Hydrocarbon Training Course includes two units, plus an additional unit can be added on request:

1. UEENEEJ174A Apply safety awareness and legal requirements for hydrocarbon refrigerants
This unit covers the safety and legal requirements to handle, use and store hydrocarbon refrigerants. All safety aspects are covered to Australian and International standards. Legal requirements are covered at local, State and National level.

2. UEENEEJ175A Service and repair self-contained hydrocarbon air conditioning and refrigeration systems
This unit covers specialised procedures for servicing and repairs to achieve the effective and efficient operation of primarily self-contained air conditioning and refrigeration equipment using Hydrocarbon as the refrigerant. It reinforces safe working practice and encompasses applying specialised knowledge of refrigeration principles that apply to Hydrocarbon, following service manuals, testing, locating and rectifying faults and defective components and completing the necessary service documentation.

Hydrocarbon refrigerants offer:

  • Greater energy efficiency
  • HFC levy avoidance
  • Improved performance – eg. Faster pull down times & improved reliability in high ambient conditions
  • Retrofit and OEM solutions that your clients will need and want to consider
  • Reduction in head pressures

The College of Climate Change is working with both the ARA (Australian Refrigeration Association) and Oz-Chill Refrigerants to offer you with training programs that will provide you with the skills and knowledge to safely, efficiently and effectively offer your clients these benefits.

What will you receive

Through the College of Climate Change training program you will receive:

  • A government training subsidy of up to 66%
  • 2 x Hydrocarbon Training Resource Manuals
  • Additional Oz-Chill Refrigerants Training Guide
  • Certification
  • Valuable experience with rapidly evolving technologies
  • One years membership with the ARA
  • Registration on the ARA website’s list of skilled contractors
  • Valuable experience with rapidly evolving technologies
  • 12 months subscription to Natural Refrigerants News

Topics covered in units UEENEEJ174A & UEENEEJ175A

The following topics are covered:

  • What is a Hydrocarbon Refrigerant
  • Typical applications for Hydrocarbons
  • Acts, Regulations and Codes
  • Refrigerant volumes and categories
  • The storage and handling of hydrocarbons
  • Hydrocarbons vs Synthetic Refrigerants
  • Maintenance Procedures
  • Refrigerant Recovery

Course Duration

The 2 units UENEEJ174A & UEENEEJ175A take 1 full day to complete.

Class Size

Classes will vary between 4 and 10 students.  This allows more classes to be run and greater time spent with each student.

Larger Companies

For companies with 5 or more students requiring training, custom courses and dates can be arranged to suit your needs.

Class Location

Classes will be run at locations in each capital city including:  Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Darwin.

Regional classes will be run from time to time also.  These will include a small additional cost, please enquire for more information.
